The first championship was held in Brazil in January 2000. The final was played in Rio’s famous Maracana stadium, winner being Brazilian club Corinthians, becoming the first World Club Champion. Vasco de Gama came in second and Rayos Del Necaxa was third having defeated Real Madrid. The second continental club championship will be held in Spain between July 30 and August 12, 2001. Matches will be held in Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia. This season UEFA increased the number of clubs taking part to 12, therefore Turkey’s Galatasaray having won the UEFA cup and the Super cup last season was chosen as the third representative of Europe for the continental championship. All 12 clubs participating in the championship will receive $5 million and it is expected that revenue from advertising and TV rights for the championship will generate another $20 million for each club. The championship in Spain is to be held in 3 groups of 4 teams.
