Turkish Prime Minister Bülent Ecevit expresses displeasure about prosecutor Talat Şalks comments concerning Deputy Prime Minister and Motherlan...
Şalk had criticised Mesut Yılmaz and the Justice Minister for leaking to the press a private telephone conversation between himself and the Justice Minister. The prosecutor has said this was politically unethical. Speaking on his way to Turkeys south-eastern province of Hatay which has been devastated by recent floods, Turkish Prime Minister Bülent Ecevit criticised the public prosecutors comments about Deputy Prime Minister and coalition partner Motherland (ANAP) leader Mesut Yılmaz.
Talat Şalk, the public prosecutor had submitted an indictment to the state security court incriminating former energy minister Cumhur Ersümer which led to the resignation of Ersümer. Ersümers Motherland Party was also impicated in the indictment which made Anavatan furious. On Monday, allegations of gross procedural errors in the indictment was published including a telephone tap between former president Süleyman Demirel and a businessman, which, the paper alleged, was irrelevant to the case and should have been destroyed.
Şalk defended himself against the allegations saying everything he did was procedural. Referring to the news in the press about a reference to Motherland party receiving bribes in the sum of 50 million dollars, Şalk had defended himself by saying that the allegation was from a statement of a defendant and he had contemplated taking it out of the indictment and had communicated his concern to the Justice Minister on the phone.
He went on to say, however, the disclosure of this privy information to the press by Mesut Yılmaz, who must have been told about it by the Justice Minister was politically unethical and that Mesut Yılmaz was trying to destroy him. In response to a question about Şalks comments Ecevit said he thought it quite out of place that the prosecutor should make such a statement. He added that jurisdiction and justice must stay outside polemics.
Meanwhile, Mesut Yılmaz made scathing remarks about Şalk in his parliamentary group meeting, saying the prosecutor could not be considered a disinterested party any more and that he was clearly a party to the case and that he was a party against his Motherland Party in the energy tender corruption case. He went on to say his party would fight against all adversaries even if this may be a prosecutor, if there was no justice behind him.
