Turkey is ready to send troops to Afghanistan to provide training to soldiers of the opposition Northern Alliance....
Defence Minister Sabahattin Çakmakoğlu, speaking on television station NTV on Thursday night, said that there is a danger of military action spreading into Turkeys neighbour Iraq. However, the minister said that he did not see any such operation being launched in the near future.
If a request was made for Turkish troops to be deployed in Iraq as part of US-led operations against terrorism, Turkey would consider the question in light of the countrys best interests, Çakmakoğlu said.
If Turkey was asked to send troops to Afghanistan to train soldiers of the anti-Taliban Northern Alliance, the minister said that a contingent was ready to be deployed. Çakmakoğlu said that, if sent to northern Afghanistan, the role of the Turkish troops would mainly be educational.
