The “Hamburg Travel Fair,” currently underway in Hamburg, Germany, where Turkey has been announced as “Partnerland” this year, is expected to draw in hoards of German tourists to Turkey. Turkish logos decorate the streets of main Hamburg arteries, as the Turkish flag is the central flag located on entry to the fair.

Öger Tours Chairman Vural Öger, on visiting the Turkish stand at the fair, said “Turkish people are tired of negative and pessimistic developments in the country. Yet, the tourism industry is offering an encouraging and a constructive outlook for the country, because there will be an explosion in the number of tourists due to arrive this year. A total of 3 million tourists from Germany are expected this year, for a total 12 million figure. Revenues, meanwhile, are also expected to increase to $12 billion for the sector this year.

Öger added that in spite of the fact that Germany is the leading country providing tourists for Turkey, 90% of the German population have still yet to visit. Turkey’s image is improving internationally and Turkey should use this factor to its advantage. According to a study, 72% of all German’s who’ve visited Turkey more than 5 times would like to see Turkey in the EU. Sixty percent of those who’ve been here 2-5 times feel the same way and 53% of those who’ve visited Turkey for the first time, accept her as European and have voiced that they would like to see Turkey become a EU member.”

Öger, meanwhile, also stressed that the government must direct a certain portion of tourism revenues back into infrastructure advances for the sector.
